International Archives Day

Public release of the 2nd volume of the book of the iconographic collection magazine ‘Arquivo Histórico da Madeira’

The Arquivo Regional e Biblioteca Pública da Madeira (ABM) celebrates this year’s International Archives Day on June 9th at 5:30 PM, in its auditorium with the official public release of an edition regarding the diffusion of 358 images of old Funchal taken since the 2nd half of the Eighth hundreds of the 19th century, and which includes interesting perspectives of the city’s landscape, urban spaces and buildings. These photographs are part of a collection initially assembled by Mr. António Aragão and were acquired by the previous Arquivo Distrital in the former photograph studios Vicentes and Perestrelos, although other subsequent acquisitions are also included.

The referenced photographs were scrupulously catalogued by Jorge Valdemar Guerra, who added information regarding the intense urban remodeling carried out in Funchal, as well as references to Toponymy or events that had taken place at the time. This edition endures the Iconographic Collection Series of the Arquivo Histórico da Madeira’ magazine, which had its first volume published in 2013, aiming to bring to everyone’s knowledge the pecious photographic collection that ABM has at its trusteeship. Mr. Emanuel Gaspar, the director of the Casa da Cultura de Santa Cruz will be presenting the work.
