ABM and the William Hinton & Sons, Lda – Deposit contract agreement for the future donation of the Hinton Mill collection
The Arquivo Regional e Biblioteca Pública da Madeira (ABM) signed a donation agreement with the William Hinton & Sons, Lda, which authorises the official deposit of the former records of the Hinton Mill to ABM.
The official ceremony was held on the 13th of December, 5:00 PM at ABM’s auditorium.
The Regional Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Culture, Mr. Eduardo Jesus and Catarina Filipa Ramos Welsh, representing the family that owns the collection, were the personalities who formally signed the “deposit” of the Hinton Archives to the Region.
The collection consists of mainly financial documents (currency books from 1873 to 1922); Registration of industrial production costs (1955); Correspondence (1902 to 1908); Monographs; Periodicals, publications in English language related to the sugar and spirits industry, among others. The documentation is dated between 1856 and 1922.
With the signing of this agreement, the ABM will be from now on, the official depositary of this collection until its future official donation to the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The institution will immediately procced to its inventory, evaluation and selection, in order to ensure the preservation, security and technical treatment of all documents delivered to its guard.
Noteworthy is the fact that the Hinton Mill was an industrial establishment of vital importance to the region’s economic. The family who owned it, played a significant role in Madeira’s society, particularly with the Torreão mill, a reference for the local saccharin cane trade.
