The Carnival season approaches and the ABM introduces a journey through other carnivals of the past, in the city of Funchal. We highlight the documents under ABM’s supervision and trusteeship.

These documents belong to the Fund of the former Administration of the Municipality of Funchal, Book 328 (1837-1838), within the official Correspondence Registry. Both documents “express” the concerns and responsibility that the Municipality’s Administrator was entrusted with in order to maintain public tranquillity. Are also highlighted the procedures and practices related to the masquerade squad and control of possible exaggerations, evident in the policing at the time. Simultaneously it’s possible to observe that back then it would not be easy to disguise and get into the masquerade mood because the authorization/ license would depended on wealth or on a friend’s income that would guarantee it.
