ABM received the private collection of priest Alfredo Vieira de Freitas

The Arquivo Regional e Biblioteca Pública da Madeira (ABM) signed a donation agreement on the 24th of October, 5.30 at the ABM auditorium with the presence of the Regional Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Culture, Mr. Eduardo Jesus and the President of the Municipality of Santa Cruz, Mr. Filipe Sousa.
The documents are part of the private library collection that used to belong to the Priest Alfredo Vieira de Freitas, and which were previously at the casa da Cultura de Santa Cruz.

A collection of great historical, literary and cultural importance and value, which gathers 2256 books, 81 and 7 boxes containing personal documents also part of his private collection, from now on part of the Region’s cultural heritage.
With the signing of this agreement, the institution is committed to ensure the collections’ preservation, safety and technical treatment of all documents delivered to its guard. After going through all necessary procedures, the documents will be available for public consultation at the Archive’s and Reserved Area Reading Room (2nd floor).
Biographic note:
Priest Alfredo Vieira de Freitas priest was born in 1908, in the parish of Gaula – Santa Cruz. He entered the theological college in 1919 and followed the Course of Humanities, Philosophy and Theology. He was also a professor of Portuguese Language/Portuguese Literature for nearly half a century.
Still as a student he wrote for the “Mocidade”, a monthly edition of the former “Escola de Artes e Ofícios”; collaborated with the local newspaper “Jornal da Madeira” and “Revista Portuguesa”.
Other publications: 1947 the speech “Mãos Suplicantes”; 1958 “Céu de Estrelas (sonnets)”; 1964 “Era uma Vez na Madeira – Lendas Contos e Tradições da nossa Terra” and “Amadis de Gaula”, among others. He died in 1992.
