These rooms hold the general database from Madeira Public Library and the former Foreign Cultures’ Library, listing all the books and other bibliographical species, magazines, newspapers, multimedia information. This collection is generalist and Universalist. Approximately 10% of this data is directly accessible for users as it is visible on the shelves and may be easily consulted. Documents may be read locally or at home. The remaining documentation is accessed by filling in an application form request at the Library’s reading room help-desk.
The collaborators are professionally skilled and trained to provide guidance and help to all users who may require.
The General Reading Room is open to all users/holder of the library card. Eventual/temporary readers (e.g. foreigners) may apply for a 3 day temporary reading authorization, which cannot be renewed.
The Children’s/Youth Room reaches children from 3 to 12 years old. Users aged under 6 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Those between 6 and 12 years old may stay by themselves at the reading room against a formal tutor/ parental authorization. It’s possible to access to reserved collection stored in deposit, as long as that appliance is done directly at the reading room or via online.

Admission at the Children’s/Youth Reading Room ends at 7:30 pm and documental requests are not allowed.
